LAS VEGAS EATING OUT:

Some time ago L.E. ate at a Roberto's Tacos. He had noticed many of this chain around town and thought that as there were so many the food was likely good.

Unfortunately that was not the case in L.E.'s experience. He believes that the food was awful, mostly inedible, greasy and vile. The condiment area was unkempt and unappealing.

Needless to say L.E. has never set foot within a Roberto's Taco Shop since. He wonders whether his experience was typical or he went on a very bad day?

An entrepreneur has apparently opened a necktie business next to the Desert Hills Motel. L.E. presumes the Motel has a strict dress code for its guests? The clincher here is the pool! Perhaps not Mandalay Bay,perhaps no sharks, yet the tariff is many, many $$$ less per night

Today's Rant: "The Credit Crisis and me."

The IMF (International Monetary Fund) expects the cost of our credit crisis to reach $1,000 billion, expressed as write downs and losses. This caused, in large part, by (in L.E.’s opinion) avaricious, unscrupulous recklessly negligent packagers of securities and mortgagors who probably knew (or at least should have known) that the paper they were writing was not substantial.
The ex Federal Reserve head, Greenspan, commented (in the April 7, 2008 F.T.) that regulation likely would not have stopped the collapse as bank loan officers “know far more about the risks and workings of their counterparties than do bank regulators.”
L.E. guesses that this argument may be extended and eventually us taxpayers will be blamed for the credit crisis and housing market collapse.
Here in Las Vegas we are apparently suffering more than most of our countrymen and women. Even those who are not holders of a so-called “sub-prime” note are suffering severely as our housing investment spirals downwards, often to reflect a potential sale price of many, many thousands of Dollars less that we have paid for our investment (discounting any improvements made).
L.E. conjectures that many of us may be better off financially by leasing rather than purchasing. This may be explained by adding the cost of one’s mortgage payments and insurances and taxes to date to the loss of an immediate sale, then dividing the product by the number of months of ownership. Compare the answer to lease cost for the same period. Extend the results by as long as you envision being in a home and the answer may surprise you.

Why is there no class action lawsuit against the major mortgage lenders who caused this disaster, yet still collect interest on our notes which often exceed our properties current worth? These are the same lenders whose unsound lending practices have directly caused our home values to decline substantially.

Sadly, U.S. taxpayers (and foreign investors) are the ones bailing out these institutions with our hard earned money. As encouragement to support this bailout we are to be given some of our money back. A further result of this fiasco is that our savings are lucky to return over 3% APR. This, in L.E.’s opinion, underscores the ridiculousness and ambiguity of the total situation.

Bearing the above in mind is there any wonder that the gap between the very wealthy and the poorest of us in the U.S. has widened further. Apparently in 2004-6 the nation’s wealthiest 5%, on average, were paid more than 12 times as much as the poorest fifth. This is up from nine times as much in 1987-9.[F.T April 9, 2008].

NEW RECIPE:

Yesterday L.E. attempted to remember his Lemon Chicken recipe. He could not remember so make up a recipe. He wanted it to be relatively healthy-without added sugar and so forth.

The result was tangy, lemony but far different than the lost recipe. L.E.'s wife enjoyed the "new" recipe and perhaps you may (L.E. is unsure). It will be available tomorrow for your convenience.

USPS & AUSTRALIAN CUSTOMS COLLUDE TO FOIL GUARANTEED REFUND FOR L.E.FANT?
L.E. decided to send “The Bears” to his twin grand daughters (now 120 days old) by Express Mail International which has a guaranteed delivery date. Because of size restrictions two packages had to be made up (hence the previously mentioned visit to the Box Brothers http://www.boxbros.com/locations/lasvegas.php).
The packages were guaranteed by USPS to be delivered in Australia by March 31, 2008 or money back. One package was so delivered, The other languished in Australian Customs for a further two days and failed to be delivered until April 2, 2008.
L.E.’s wife called USPS to enquire regarding how to obtain the refund of postage as the package was not delivered within the specified time. (some $80.00 for that package’s stamp). She was rudely informed that the guarantee did not apply as the package was held up in customs and, therefore, the guarantee has no effect. When asking the USPS representative for details of the regulation which provided for that result she was informed that the agent did not know the regulation. L.E.'s wife found the USPS regulation, and it does exclude refund for such delays.
L.E. asks what is the point of the guarantee? Is it merely as sales tool?
Every package must clear overseas’ customs. One may reasonably conclude that our USPS had made arrangements with overseas post offices that Express mail packages would be treated as express items (and not be left to languish in customs sheds as is apparently the case), and, therefore a delivery date is actually able to be guaranteed. Clearly there is no point in offering a guarantee where it is meaningless as appears the case here. Shame on our U.S.P.S. for misleading L.E. Fant and others. Let his superior readers take heed.

SOLAR UPDATE:
The solar street lamp on test at L.E.’s Las Vegas community has been taken back to the factory for evaluation by its engineering department (here in the Las Vegas area) against the laboratory standard lamp after four weeks of being on test in L.E.'s Las Vegas community.
The most interesting test (for L.E.) is whether the lamp now provides as much or more light output throughout the night as existing gas lamps or whether further engineering is required to meet that standard.
Last evening the manufacturer brought some board members from a neighboring community to see the lamp in action. Also a low voltage alternative was demonstrated. While the low voltage system is clearly brighter than the solar lamp and gas lamp, its installation is problematical, as all owners need to allow trenching and access to power at their residences.
Should the solar lamps prove a success (and there is no apparent reason why they should not) they will likely be a huge cost saving to Las Vegas communities as well as reducing greenhouse gas emissions substantially. The savings may be used to provide security patrols or other measures to make our communities safer places in which to live.

YET ANOTHER ELECTRIC CAR FOR LAS VEGAS:
This one is from China and is marketed by a California company based in San Luis Obispo. The vehicle apparently has a range of around 50 miles per charge and is limited in speed so as to be a NEV (neighborhood electric vehicle) which may, L.E. believes, (in Las Vegas) be used on streets which have a 35 mph speed limit.
L.E. is disappointed that the MSRP is at $10,000 and is of the opinion that if closer to $5,000 many would be sold, whereas, value is not apparent at the former figure. NEV’s do not have the safety items such as airbags as do regular vehicles, nor are they tested for safety by our government, therefore, huge cost savings should be available to the consumer which savings are not apparent.

L.E.’s LAS VEGAS FISH DISH A HUGE SUCCESS!

L.E. is pleased that his free Las Vegas Fish Dish recipe has been enjoyed by so many. Its simplicity and balance of flavors and textures (AND LACK OF "FISHY" SMELL) make it appear on his menu at least weekly. He is testing the Las Vegas Easy Yet Extremely Tasty Chicken Dish for you now and hopes to provide it very soon. Later he may share a Cornish pasty recipe which has been handed down for generations. As a child L.E. used to be sent to Cornwall to stay with a family whose head (named Fred) was a prisoner of war buddy of L.E.’s father. During L.E.’s stay he would consume many piping hot pasties. Last year L.E. visited Cornwall and the widow of Fred, now over 90 years of age. L.E. noted her recipe and will share it with you soon. It will use cow meat as an ingredient (Yes George-cow meat).


WE HAVE NOW LOST 4,000 AMERICANS, MANY ALLIES AND COUNTLESS IRAQIS IN THE IRAQ FIASCO:
Yet both major parties (or as L.E. believes talking heads for corporate America and the industrial/military complex) still avoid and evade definitive withdrawal schedules. It appears that the lessons learned from the Vietnam experience (which caused/prompted L.E. to spent 6 years of his youth in armed service) have been forgotten.
